Why online therapy in Maryland works for so many people

Some weeks, the hardest part of therapy is getting there. A long drive on the Beltway, a child home sick, a shift that runs late, or a body that just doesn’t want to leave the house. Online therapy in Maryland removes those obstacles without lowering the quality of care. You see a licensed clinician over secure video at a time that fits, from a quiet bedroom, a parked car, or your office with the door closed.

Studies of video-based therapy have found it can be as effective as in-person sessions for many common concerns, including anxiety and depression. It also makes consistency easier, and showing up regularly is often what moves therapy forward. Clients join us by telehealth from Bowie and Largo to Rockville, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, as well as from parts of the state where finding a therapist nearby is much harder.

What we treat by telehealth

Nearly everything we offer in the office can happen by video. Individual counseling for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and stress translates well to the screen. So does couples and family work, as long as everyone can join from a private place. Some clients start online and move to the office later, while others mix the two depending on the week.

Telehealth isn’t the best fit for everything. If you’re in an active crisis, need hands-on support where you live, or find it hard to get any privacy at home, we’ll talk through other options. That might mean in-person sessions in Lanham or Wheaton, or our community-based mobile treatment services for people who need more intensive care. The goal is the right level of support, not forcing everything onto a screen.

Common reasons clients choose telehealth

  • Anxiety, panic and stress
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Relationship and family conflict
  • Career stress, burnout and life transitions
  • Faith-based counseling, on request
  • Sessions with Spanish-speaking clinicians

Setting up your first video session

You don’t need special technical skills. After you schedule, you’ll receive a secure link. At your appointment time, open it from a laptop, tablet or smartphone with a camera and microphone. Try the link a few minutes early and close apps that use a lot of bandwidth. Headphones help a lot, both for sound quality and for keeping your conversation private from anyone in the next room.

Small things that make online sessions feel more like the real thing

  • Use the same spot each week so it starts to feel like your therapy space
  • Sit facing a light source rather than with a bright window behind you
  • Silence notifications and put your phone face down if you’re on a computer
  • Keep water and tissues within reach
  • If you share a home, run a fan or white-noise app outside your door, or join from your car
  • Agree with your therapist at the start on what to do if the connection drops

Telehealth for teens, couples and older adults

Teens often take to video sessions quickly. Talking from their own room can feel less formal than sitting in an office, and it’s easier to fit around school, practice and a part-time job. For parents in Bowie, Greenbelt or Silver Spring, it also removes the after-school drive. We’ll talk with you about how to give your teen real privacy at home, since that’s what makes the hour useful.

Couples can join from the same couch or from two different places, which helps when schedules or tension make sitting side by side hard. Older adults, including those 65 and older on Medicare, often appreciate skipping the drive and parking. If a tablet or phone feels intimidating, a family member can help with the first login, then step out of the room so the session stays private.

Privacy and safety when therapy happens on screen

We protect your privacy online the same way we do in the office. Sessions take place over secure live video, your therapist joins from a private setting, and the same confidentiality rules apply, including the legal limits your therapist will explain at intake. You control your side of the room, so choose a spot where you can talk freely. If that’s hard at home, tell us and we’ll problem-solve together.

Two practical safety points. You need to be physically in Maryland at the time of your session, because that’s where our clinicians are licensed, and we’ll confirm your location at the start in case we ever need to send help. Telehealth is also not an emergency service. If you’re thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

Paying for telehealth therapy

We accept Maryland Medicaid, Medicare and most major plans, including CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare/Optum and Johns Hopkins EHP. Before your first session, we confirm your telehealth benefits, obtain any authorization, and tell you about copays or deductibles so there are no surprises. If you’re paying yourself, sessions are $150 and you can apply for our sliding scale. Please give 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel.

Same clinicians, same standards, same confidentiality. The only thing that changes is the commute.

Frequently asked questions

Telehealth Therapy: your questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Talk to a real person. 301-731-1222

Is online therapy in Maryland as effective as in-person therapy?

For many people, yes. Research comparing video therapy with in-person sessions has found similar results for common concerns like anxiety and depression. What matters most is the relationship with your therapist and attending regularly, and telehealth often makes consistency easier. Some people do prefer the office, and you can switch between formats at our Lanham and Wheaton locations.

Does insurance cover telehealth therapy in Maryland?

Many plans cover telehealth therapy, including Maryland Medicaid and Medicare, but benefits vary. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, CareFirst, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Johns Hopkins EHP, Wellpoint (Amerigroup), Luminare Health and Claritev. Before your first video session, we check your coverage and tell you about any copay or deductible.

Can I have a telehealth session if I’m traveling outside Maryland?

Usually not. Our clinicians are licensed in Maryland, so you need to be physically located in Maryland during your session. If you’ll be away, let us know ahead of time and we can reschedule or plan around your trip. This rule protects you by making sure your care follows Maryland’s standards and that we can get you help locally if needed.

What do I need for a telehealth session?

A computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera, microphone and a steady internet connection, plus a private place to talk. Headphones are helpful. You don’t need to download complicated software or create an account with an outside service. We’ll send you a secure link before your appointment, and you just open it at your scheduled time.

Can couples or families do therapy online?

Yes. Couples and family sessions work well by video, either from the same room or from different locations in Maryland. If you’re joining from one device, sit so your therapist can see everyone’s face. For families with younger children, we may suggest shorter sessions or a mix of telehealth and in-person visits.

Can I switch between telehealth and in-person sessions?

Absolutely. Many clients mix formats, coming to our Lanham office near New Carrollton or our Wheaton office near the Metro when they can, and joining by video when life gets busy. Your therapist and records stay the same either way. Learn more about our outpatient counseling services and what we offer in the office.
