Frequently asked questions

Starting therapy brings up a lot of questions. Here are the ones we hear most, answered honestly.

Thinking about therapy

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to use them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way: teach you new skills, offer different perspectives, listen without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Counseling is also completely confidential, so you won’t have to worry about others “knowing your business.” And if you’ve been confiding in a friend, there’s a risk that once you feel better you avoid that person so you aren’t reminded of a difficult time.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed alongside counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on the strengths that help you accomplish your goals. When medication is appropriate, our clinic offers psychiatric assessment and medication management.

What sessions are like

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. Your clinician tailors the therapeutic approach to your specific needs, drawing on methods such as CBT, trauma-focused therapy, mindfulness, and art or play therapy for children.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique, so it isn’t possible to say in general. The length of counseling depends on your goals for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that brought you to counseling in the first place. Your clinician will check in on progress with you regularly.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

We’re so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. Try practicing what you learn between sessions, be honest about what is and isn’t working, and bring the questions that come up during the week.

Can I do therapy online?

Yes. Telehealth sessions happen over secure live video from your computer or smartphone, anywhere in Maryland. A camera is recommended but not required.

Privacy, cost & logistics

Is what I say in therapy confidential?

Yes. The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without your written permission. Exceptions include suspected abuse of a child, dependent adult or elder; a threat of serious bodily harm to another person; and situations where a client intends to harm themselves and safety measures are needed. You can read our privacy policy.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, including Maryland Medicaid, Medicare, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Johns Hopkins EHP and Wellpoint. See rates & insurance and our sliding scale.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please cancel at least 24 hours before your session. Otherwise, you may be charged the full rate of the session.

What should I do in a mental health emergency?

McGuire Therapeutic Services is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (press 2 for Spanish), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. In Prince George’s County you can also call the mobile crisis team at 301-429-2185.
