A therapist in Lanham & Wheaton, MD with a full clinic behind you

Most people who call us aren’t sure exactly what kind of help they need. They know sleep has gotten worse, the worry won’t switch off, a loss is still sitting heavy, or home has become tense. As a licensed outpatient mental health clinic in Lanham and Wheaton, MD, we can meet you where you are. You start with a therapist, and if it would help, we add a psychiatric assessment or medication management without you having to start over at a different practice.

McGuire Therapeutic Services is CARF accredited and has served Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties since 2008. For more than 25 years our team has worked with and advocated for people living with mental illness and developmental disabilities. That history shapes how the clinic runs: practical, person-centered and respectful of what you already know about your own life. Clients come to our Lanham office from Seabrook, New Carrollton, Glenn Dale, Greenbelt and Bowie, and to our Wheaton office from across Montgomery County.

Individual, child, group and family therapy

Different problems call for different kinds of sessions. Individual therapy gives you an hour that is entirely yours. Child therapy uses play and art alongside conversation, because younger clients often show what they feel before they can name it. Group therapy connects you with people working through similar struggles, which can ease the isolation that comes with anxiety, depression or recovery. Family therapy helps households untangle conflict and talk with less blame.

Your therapist draws from approaches such as CBT, trauma-focused therapy, psychodynamic and existential work, Gestalt, strength-based methods and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. The blend depends on you. Some people want concrete tools and between-session practice; others need room to understand patterns that go back years. Most want a bit of both, and your plan can shift as your needs change. You’ll always know why your therapist is suggesting something.

Common reasons people start therapy with us

  • Anxiety, panic and constant worry
  • Depression, low mood and bipolar disorder
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma, PTSD and abuse
  • Family conflict, divorce and relationship strain
  • Anger, self-esteem and coping skills
  • Life transitions, career stress and racial identity
  • Women’s issues and LGBTQ+ affirming care

Psychiatric assessment and medication management

Sometimes therapy alone is enough. Sometimes symptoms like severe depression, mood swings, intrusive thoughts or sleeplessness are hard to work on until they ease a little. Through the OMHC, you can have a psychiatric assessment to clarify a diagnosis and talk through whether medication might help. If it does, medication management appointments track how it’s working, adjust doses and watch for side effects, while your therapist keeps working with you on skills, insight and the parts of life a prescription can’t fix.

One clinic, one care team. With your written permission, your therapist and prescriber can coordinate, so you don’t have to keep repeating your story.

What to expect at your intake

Before your first visit, you’ll complete our OMHC intake questionnaire. It asks what’s bringing you in, about your health history and medications, and what you hope will change. Answer as honestly as you can. There are no wrong answers, and you can leave anything you’d rather discuss in person. If you’re using insurance, we obtain any needed authorization and tell you about copays or deductibles before you’re seen.

The first session is a conversation, not a test. Your therapist will ask questions, listen for what matters most to you, and explain how they think they can help. Together you’ll set a few goals and decide how often to meet. It’s normal to feel nervous beforehand and a little drained afterward. If something about the fit doesn’t feel right, tell us. Matching you with the right clinician matters more than sticking with the first one.

Your privacy, and the limits of confidentiality

What you say in therapy stays in therapy. Your confidentiality is protected by law, and we don’t share information about your care with employers, family members or anyone else without your written permission. That includes the simple fact that you’re a client. When you want us to coordinate with a doctor, school or another provider, you decide what is shared and with whom, and you can change your mind later.

There are a few situations where the law requires us to act, even if that means sharing information without your consent. These exceptions exist to protect people from serious harm, and your therapist will review them with you at the start of care. If you’re ever in crisis between sessions, call, text or chat 988, free and 24/7, reach the Prince George’s County mobile crisis team at 301-429-2185, or call 911.

We may have to break confidentiality when:

  • We suspect a child is being abused or neglected
  • We suspect a dependent adult or an elder is being abused, neglected or exploited
  • You tell us you intend to seriously harm another person
  • You are at imminent risk of seriously harming or killing yourself

How do I find a therapist in Lanham or Wheaton, MD who takes my insurance?

Our Lanham and Wheaton offices accept Maryland Medicaid, Medicare, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Johns Hopkins EHP, Wellpoint (Amerigroup), Luminare Health and Claritev. When you contact us, we check your benefits, obtain any authorization your plan requires, and tell you about copays or deductibles before your first session, so you know your costs up front.

What is an outpatient mental health clinic (OMHC)?

An outpatient mental health clinic provides ongoing mental health care while you live at home and keep up with work, school and family. At McGuire Therapeutic Services, the OMHC includes individual, child, group and family therapy, plus psychiatric assessments and medication management. It’s a step between occasional check-ins and more intensive programs like hospitalization or mobile treatment.

Is what I say in therapy confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is protected by law, and we don’t share your information without your written permission. The exceptions are suspected abuse of a child, dependent adult or elder; a threat of serious harm to another person; and imminent risk that you will seriously harm yourself. In those cases we’re required to act to keep people safe. Your therapist will explain this at intake.

Can I get therapy and medication at the same clinic?

Yes. Psychiatric assessments and medication management are available through our OMHC, so your prescriber and therapist can coordinate with your permission. Many people find it easier to have one care team that sees the whole picture. You can ask about a psychiatric assessment when you first call or at any point once therapy has started.

Do you offer therapy for children and families?

Yes. We offer child therapy that uses play and art alongside conversation, family therapy for households working through conflict or change, and therapy for teens, adults and older adults. For children who need additional skill-building support, our psychiatric rehabilitation program serves kids 6 and older who are already in therapy.

What if I can’t afford $150 a session?

Please don’t let cost stop you from reaching out. Most clients use insurance, including Maryland Medicaid and Medicare. If you’re uninsured or your plan doesn’t cover therapy, you can apply for our sliding scale, which adjusts the fee based on your income. We’ll walk you through the options when you call.
