A smoking cessation group in Lanham & Wheaton, MD, led by a counselor
Most people who smoke have tried to quit before, often more than once. That isn’t failure; it’s how nicotine works. Our Kick the Habit smoking cessation group in Lanham and Wheaton, MD is led by a licensed counselor on our clinical team. It brings a counselor’s understanding of habits, stress and motivation into a small, supportive group of adults working toward the same goal.
Group members come from New Carrollton, Seabrook, Glenn Dale and Landover, among other nearby communities. You don’t need to have set a quit date or cut down first. You only need to want something different for your health, your wallet or the people you love. Many members have smoked for decades; others want to quit before a new baby arrives, after a health scare, or because prices keep climbing. Every reason is a good reason.
Why quitting with a group helps
Nicotine dependence has two sides: the physical pull of cravings and the deep habits built around them, such as the cigarette with coffee, in the car or after an argument. Willpower alone rarely handles both. A group helps with both sides by pairing practical strategies with steady encouragement. A group gives you people to check in with, honest stories about what worked, and encouragement on the days your resolve wears thin.
Our approach is strength-based. Instead of shaming slips, we look at what you’re already doing right and build on it. Each session mixes practical skills with real conversation, so you leave with a plan for the week ahead. Members often say that hearing someone else describe the exact craving they felt that morning is what finally makes the struggle feel manageable.
Quitting brings health benefits at any age, and many people notice small wins early, like easier breathing on the stairs, a better sense of taste or more money left at the end of the month. In the group, we celebrate those wins, because they help keep motivation alive through the harder weeks.

What we work on in the group
Stress is one of the most common triggers. Many members find simple breathing and awareness practices from mindfulness-based therapy useful when a craving hits during a hard day. You’ll learn to spot the early signs of a craving, like restlessness or the urge to step outside, and practice quick tools to wait it out. Cravings usually rise, peak and fade if you don’t feed them.
- Identifying your personal smoking triggers
- Riding out cravings without giving in
- Replacing smoking routines with healthier behaviors
- Managing stress without reaching for a cigarette
- Handling changes in mood, sleep and appetite
- Planning for social situations and pressure
- Recovering from a slip without giving up
- Asking family and friends for the right kind of support

Who the group is for
Kick the Habit is designed for adults who want to stop smoking cigarettes or using nicotine, whether you smoke a few a day or more than a pack. It’s a good fit if you’ve tried to quit alone, if stress is your biggest trigger, or if you simply want accountability from people who get it. If you’re pregnant, have a medical condition or have questions about withdrawal, talk with your doctor as you plan your quit.
- Adults who smoke daily or socially
- People who have tried to quit before
- Anyone who smokes to cope with stress or emotions
- People who want in-person accountability
- Partners or friends who want to quit together
Pair the group with other free help
The group works well alongside other quit tools. The Maryland Tobacco Quitline is free for Maryland residents: call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for phone coaching between sessions. It’s also worth asking your doctor or pharmacist about FDA-approved quit medications and nicotine replacement. Research has long shown that combining counseling support with medication improves the odds of quitting for good. Phone coaching and group support work well together because they cover different moments of the week.
Quitting can stir up anxiety or low mood, especially if smoking has been your main way of coping. If that happens, one-on-one counseling or anxiety therapy can help you through it. Our depression therapy can also help if your mood drops in the weeks after you quit.

Frequently asked questions
Kick the Habit Smoking Group: your questions, answered
Still wondering about something? Talk to a real person. 301-731-1222
How much does the Kick the Habit smoking group cost?
Kick the Habit sessions are $40–$60 each. When you call, we’ll confirm the current rate and talk about whether insurance or our sliding scale may apply. For many people, the cost of a few sessions is less than what they spend on cigarettes in a couple of weeks.
Is there quit smoking support in Prince George’s County?
Yes. Our Kick the Habit group meets in person at our Lanham and Wheaton offices and is led by a licensed counselor. For extra free help, Maryland residents can call the Maryland Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Using both together gives you in-person accountability plus phone coaching between sessions.
Do I need to have already quit before joining?
No. Most members join while they’re still smoking. The group helps you understand your habits, prepare for a quit date and handle the first difficult weeks. If you’ve already quit and want support staying smoke-free, you’re welcome too.
Does the group help with vaping?
The group is for adults who want to stop smoking cigarettes or using nicotine. The triggers and habit patterns behind vaping are often similar, so call us to talk about whether the group is a good fit for you.
Can I use nicotine patches or quit medications while in the group?
Yes, and many people find it helps. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about FDA-approved options like patches, gum, lozenges or prescription medication. The group doesn’t prescribe, but it supports whatever plan you and your doctor choose, and helps with the behavioral side that medication can’t reach.
What if I slip and smoke after quitting?
A slip is common and doesn’t erase your progress. In the group, we treat it as information: what triggered it, what you could try next time, and how to get back on track the same day. Members often find that how they respond to a slip matters more than the slip itself.
