Faith-based counseling, on your terms

Many people in Lanham, Wheaton and across Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties tell us the same thing: they want a counselor who won’t brush their faith aside, but they also want real help, not a sermon. Christian counseling at our Lanham and Wheaton offices gives you both. Our mission says it simply: “We encourage our clients’ personal, relationship and spiritual growth.” For clients who request it, spiritual growth becomes an open, welcome part of the work.

For clients who don’t request it, faith never enters the room uninvited. Every session, with or without a spiritual focus, rests on the same licensed, evidence-based care you’d receive in our individual counseling. Faith is something you bring in, not something we impose. That balance matters. Faith can be a deep source of strength, meaning and community, and ignoring it can leave part of you outside the room. At the same time, a counselor’s job is to help you heal, not to tell you what to believe, so your values always lead.

What faith integration can look like

You decide how much faith shapes your sessions. Some clients want to open with prayer every week. Others simply want a therapist who understands church culture, so they don’t have to explain why a falling-out with their congregation hurts so much. Your counselor will ask, listen and follow your lead, and you can change your mind at any point. There’s no test of faith and no right answer about how religious your sessions should be.

Depending on what you want, sessions may include

  • Opening or closing a session with prayer
  • Reflecting on Scripture that speaks to fear, grief, forgiveness or hope
  • Using CBT tools to examine heavy beliefs, such as “God must be punishing me”
  • Building spiritual practices like gratitude, rest and quiet reflection into your coping plan
  • Room to wrestle honestly with doubt, disappointment or anger at God
  • Setting goals that line up with your values and sense of calling

Concerns we help with

People of faith face the same struggles as everyone else, and sometimes an extra layer of guilt for struggling at all. We work with anxiety and constant worry, depression and seasons of spiritual dryness, grief and loss, trauma, marriage strain, and hurt that happened inside a church. Our clinicians draw on CBT, trauma-focused, psychodynamic, existential and strength-based methods, blending conventional and alternative approaches to fit you.

Faith and professional care work together. If you’re having thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) right away, or call 911. Reaching out is not a lack of faith. Many people of faith carry shame about needing help, as if more prayer should have been enough. Caring for your mind is no different from seeing a doctor for your body, and many clients find their faith feels steadier once their symptoms ease.

  • Anxiety, fear and worry
  • Depression and low motivation
  • Grief, loss and life transitions
  • Trauma and church or spiritual hurt
  • Guilt, shame and forgiveness
  • Marriage, parenting and family conflict
  • Identity, purpose and calling

Respect for every faith, and for no faith

Christian counseling is one option among many, not a requirement. We welcome clients from every Christian tradition, people of other faiths, those who call themselves spiritual but not religious, and those with no faith at all. Our practice is LGBTQ+ affirming, and that doesn’t change when faith is part of the conversation. If you belong to another tradition and want your beliefs reflected in counseling, tell us. We’ll listen first, ask questions and respect what matters to you.

Clients come to our Lanham office from Bowie, Mitchellville, Largo and Glenn Dale, to our Wheaton office from across Montgomery County, and many others meet with us by secure telehealth from anywhere in Maryland. Let us know when you call that you’d like faith integrated, and we’ll match you with a clinician who is a good fit. Our team understands how deeply a faith community can shape a person’s healing.

Encouragement between sessions: our prayer line

Many clients ask for something to hold onto between appointments. Our free prayer text line sends encouraging weekly messages. Just text PRAYER to 855-852-5291. It’s a source of encouragement, not therapy, and it isn’t monitored as a crisis service. Your counseling sessions remain the place for the deeper work. Some clients also bring a verse, a sermon note or a journal entry from the week into session to talk through what it stirred up.

Counseling doesn’t replace your church family, either. Many clients lean on a pastor, a small group or trusted friends while they work with us. We see those relationships as strengths, and if you’d like, we’ll help you think through how to ask the people around you for the support you need.

Text PRAYER to 855-852-5291 for weekly words of encouragement. It complements counseling but never replaces it.

Frequently asked questions

Christian Counseling: your questions, answered

McGuire Therapeutic Services

Still wondering about something? Talk to a real person. 301-731-1222

Do I have to be a Christian to see a counselor at McGuire Therapeutic Services?

No. Christian counseling is available on request, but most of our clients receive standard clinical counseling with no religious content at all. We serve people of every faith and of no faith. If spirituality matters to you in another tradition, tell us; we’ll respect your beliefs and never try to change them.

Where can I find a faith-based therapist in Prince George’s County?

McGuire Therapeutic Services offers faith-based counseling at our main office on Annapolis Road in Lanham, with a second office in Wheaton and telehealth across Maryland. Our licensed clinicians integrate prayer and Scripture only when you ask, while using proven methods like CBT and trauma-focused therapy.

Will my counselor push religious beliefs on me?

Never. Faith enters a session only when you invite it, and you set the boundaries. Some clients want prayer every week; others want a counselor who simply understands their background. If you’d prefer no spiritual content at all, your counseling will be fully clinical, and you can change your preference at any time.

What’s the difference between Christian counseling and pastoral counseling?

Pastoral counseling is spiritual guidance from a pastor or ministry leader. Christian counseling here is provided by licensed mental health clinicians who can assess, diagnose and treat conditions like anxiety, depression and trauma, while integrating faith at your request. With your written permission, we can coordinate with your pastor so your care feels connected.

Does insurance cover Christian counseling?

Christian counseling is outpatient counseling, so it’s handled like any other therapy. We accept Maryland Medicaid, Medicare, CareFirst, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and more. Coverage generally depends on your plan and a diagnosis being treated. We confirm benefits and copays before your first visit, and a sliding scale is available by application.

Can engaged couples get Christian premarital counseling?

Yes. Many couples ask for premarital counseling that includes their shared faith. Sessions can cover expectations, finances, family of origin, conflict and how you’ll practice faith as a family. Learn more on our couples and premarital counseling page, and mention your preference when you call.

Is the prayer text line the same as therapy?

No. The prayer line sends encouraging weekly texts when you text PRAYER to 855-852-5291. It’s meant to lift you up between sessions, not to treat a mental health condition, and no one monitors it for emergencies. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.
